Earlier this year, while attending a homeschool conference, I had a
conversation with a mother about nature studies and nature journaling. She
had decided that her students would do nature journals and had started off
with a vengeance to see that goal accomplished.

She admitted that she had taken her children to the zoo with their journal
books in hand and when they weren't completely enthusiastic, she had told
them they were not going home till they had sketched and written in their
journals. She was looking at me expectantly, and I replied, "Well, that
would certainly be one way to do it."

"Not the best?" Then she smiled. I cautiously began to outline what I
thought might be a better way to elicit genuine excitement from her
students.

When it comes to nature journaling, have any of you ever faced this? It
seems to me that when you teach nature subjects in school and even when
you engage in particular field trips for outdoor discovery, it is a good
idea to give assignments with specific parameters, such as "write a
paragraph about . . . ," "write five fascinating facts about . . . ,"
"draw a diagram or sketch of the subject . . . ," "research the
classification name of a specimen, . . ." etc. These assignments, when
completed, can be kept in a science notebook and would be considered part
of routine schoolwork.

However, there may be a more creative and beneficial way to approach the
somewhat different subject of nature journaling.

If you read the article titled "The Love and Lure of Nature Walking" in
the Summer 2008 issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, then you were
introduced to many of the important reasons to lead your children out into
nature—to observe and learn to appreciate the world the Lord created. You
can help your children begin to make discoveries that can help them better
understand the world in which they live. Once you've been on several
walks, you and your students may find yourselves wishing for special ways
to "capture" in a more permanent way what you've seen and what you've
found. Nature journaling seems to satisfy this longing.

However, it is at this point that each person's observations will probably
be quite different. Each child has different ways that he would be
happiest chronicling his adventures and the specimens he finds along the
way. Some will want to draw or sketch in their nature journal, while
others will want to use watercolors, colored pencils, or take photographs
of what they find. A decision to include quotes, Bible verses, poems, or
nature writings by other nature lovers is a choice that will delight one
child, yet that choice may not be the least bit interesting to another
child.

In the same way, one child might decide to make entries in his journal
every day, while another falls into quite a fruitful routine of recording
his or her entries once a week or once a month. The final effort
(remember—the young start small) is the telling factor. What a child
loves, he will be glad to do. Is he beginning to "see and feel" and
express himself in creative ways?

Since our goal is to help our children find great joy in exploring nature,
then we should attentively observe each child and discern how best to
inspire him to grow to love what has been created. As far as nature
journaling goes, this might not be the previously mentioned scenario of
threatening to stay at the zoo until the journal entries are complete.
Rather, encourage each one to explore and find his own way to record his
discoveries.

Sure, a few children will need more inspiration than others to get them
journaling. For one who has stronger interests elsewhere, a good general
hands-on knowledge of the outdoors is still important, and though this
type of student may not have a nature journal that is quite as creative or
filled to the brim as those of others, that is okay.

Many books on the topic of nature journaling are out there. In the
sidebar, you will find a list of my absolute favorites, and yet, each of
them is very different. Even adults look, perceive, and express what they
see in broadly different forms—true nature journaling!

As Mary Blocksma (one of my favorite authors) began to look around, she
realized nature had such varied aspects that to try to learn about them
all at once was overwhelming. So she decided to seek out one thing each
day that was interesting. She would observe it, make note of it in her
journal, possibly sketch it, and if she became more interested would do a
bit of research on the subject and include that information in her journal
as well. She began on January 1 and continued throughout the year, making
a new entry each day. This method might appeal to some journalers.

Clare Walker Leslie chronicled her entries and drawings according to
seasons of the year, while Kristin Pratt-Serafini filled an entire journal
with observations of her own pond and all that she discovered there.
Consie Powell sketched and made notes of canoeing trips in Boundary
Waters, Canada. In the early 1900s, Edith Holden painted nature subjects
and included poetry in her journals; Donald Stokes, a modern-day
naturalist, penned his books to sound as if you were walking along with
him on his adventures. Any of these models can provide inspiration, and
your student can go from there to determine his own style to express that
which he sees and experiences.

I'll share a few age-related ideas that might be helpful. Let's begin with
3- and 4-year-olds. Find or draw small pictures of things you know you
will see on a short nature walk, such as a tree, a bee, a bird, an ant, a
spider web, etc. Don't worry about your drawing; your preschooler won't
critique your work—a simple impression will do.

Now, use a loop of tape to lightly fasten your pictures to a clipboard
that you will carry. Purchase a small spiral notebook, the 5" x 3" kind.
Show your child the board of pictures and talk about them briefly. Then go
for your walk and ask your child to be looking for the things in your
pictures. When he spots one, get excited along with him and bring out the
little notebook. Let him know that this is his nature journal—just like
Mommy's. Remove from the clipboard the picture of the item he has found,
leaving the loop of tape on the clipboard. From your pocket, whip out a
glue stick—loved by all preschoolers—and let him glue the picture right on
to a page in his very own book!

Continue your walk and keep gluing a picture per page. If your child stops
and becomes captivated by a particular find—if he spends a long time
carefully observing—then just save the rest of the pictures for the next
walk. You might ask him if there is anything about his "find" that he
would like you to write down in his book, and you can write it for him.
Otherwise, just enjoy the walk together.

The goal of your walk and the little notebook is to lead your child to
spend time outdoors looking at what God has made and to capture his
observations in such a way that he can keep them. It is supposed to be
great fun: time with you, time to play the game of "I Found It!" and time
to take a moment to "make a note" of what he has found.

Remember that when it rains, or when it is too cold or too hot to take a
walk, your young one can sit at the window and observe. Can he see
something interesting even from within his own home? Help him journal that
in some way, if he is interested.

The best way I know to inspire your elementary age child is for him to see
you observing nature and enjoying journaling what you see as you walk
along together. Keep a journal of your own, and make lots of notes in
front of him. In other words, though it will take more outings, you start
first. Take time to walk with your child outdoors and simply talk about
things you see. Then produce your notebook and tell him that you are
noting the date, weather conditions, and what you've found. Let your child
see that you are enjoying this journaling process. Then let him catch you
adding to your journal at home with an extra drawing, a quote, poem, or
another fact you found through research.

After a few weeks, with several outings, your child will probably already
have tried to make his own journal or asked for one to use. If this has
not happened, ask him if he'd like a special place to keep notes of what
he has seen. If he's hesitant, then just carry along with you a small book
for him to use if he decides that he wishes to join in.

I recommend that you not push the nature journaling unless it is an actual
school assignment. The lessons slowly learned from being outside and
discussing what you both see will be completely beneficial in their own
right. Just keep working on your own journal and your child may yet become
authentically inspired.

When you are working with junior and senior high students, it's good to
remember that privacy and self-expression are paramount. Make sure your
student knows which types of requests are academic assignments to be
turned in and when it is okay to work in his journal in his own way. This
is very important at this age. At your library, search for books that tell
about journaling, and bring home good ones that your student can peruse.
These books will offer ideas about different types of books; covers; how
to draw, paint, and letter; and how to take great photographs of nature.

There are countless volumes of poetry, quotes, Bible verses, and portions
of writings by great naturalists (John Burroughs, Henry David Thoreau,
Anna Botsford Comstock, Theodore Roosevelt, Gene Stratton Porter, Wilson
"Snowflake" Bentley, and more) that your child may want to include to
broaden his nature journaling experience. These can complement and support
what he has seen and felt on his nature outings.

As your older child looks through various books about journaling, he may
latch onto a tiny idea from one and glean an additional idea from another.
He will know what he likes the moment he sees it. He won't feel that
you've "assigned" a particular way to do his nature journal, just that you
have provided more ideas and encouragement to continue to broaden his
expression. You may find some books to broaden your nature journaling
experience too!

There is no "certain way" to create a nature journal. Countless thousands
of nature enthusiasts have created a nature journal just the way it suited
each one of them best. You have many reasons to want your children to love
the nature that the Lord has created for them to enjoy, and they will have
a better chance of enjoying capturing their discoveries on
paper—journaling what they see and feel—if they are led very gently to
find their own way.

Did you know that in the days of your great-grandparents the inclusion of nature instruction in school was a serious concern? Many of you have read a bit of Charlotte Mason’s books or A Girl of the Limberlost or Freckles. Some of you even own Anna Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study, though for many of us it is collecting dust daily. Did you know that in days gone by, students routinely went on nature walks at all times of the year? They learned about the animals, trees, insects, stars, rocks, and weather, and they learned about them in great detail through daily observation, daily lessons, and daily application.

What has happened in the years since? Has nature grown less amazing? Is it less magnificent and less important these days to notice colors, sounds, smells, designs, and all the beauty that is free just for the taking? Is it less important to one’s well-being to have times of quiet solitude in beautiful surroundings? Is it less interesting now to be swept away with the beauty of the night sky or go owl watching together? What has happened?

In the classroom it could be that the topic itself is slowly escaping from many school curricula. In our present culture, the Creator has been removed from the traditional classroom. With His departure, much of the wonder and amazement with which teachers eagerly tied Him to what has been made left as well.

Take, for example, the simple adventure of walking outdoors and collecting a few specimens of tree leaves. Careful observation could disclose that there are those with beautiful red stems and others with the palest of greenish-brown ones. For many young students, finding that each of these different, beautiful leaves belong to a particular kind of tree might be an awesome discovery. Yet, in many traditional classrooms, the entire process has been reduced to "memorize twenty leaf formations and the test is Friday." The students are left wondering, “Why? Why should we study this?” Because appreciation of the beauty and carefulness with which the Creator has made each and every natural thing is left out of the teaching, there no longer seems to be a good reason to learn about such things. Wonder and amazement have just evaporated from most nature lessons.

And all this while everything out there—from the stars in the sky to the minute worlds inside a single drop of pond water to the cells in a blade of grass—shouts the praises of the One who spoke it all into being. Yes, perhaps we should break away a while from our televisions, video games, soccer games, and central heating and air-conditioning to once again acquaint ourselves with the great outdoors! We have become more and more an indoor-dwelling people, and we’ve not noticed that so much of what speaks of the greatness of our God has therefore been closed out of our lives and out of the lives of our children. The very topics that used to be taught enthusiastically to both the tiniest child and the student of higher education are no longer on the agenda or are taught only from textbooks, rarely through personal adventures.

Even in our homeschooling we are hesitant these days to get outside and find safe places to examine what has been made. We just don’t take the time, because we’ve forgotten how vitally important this activity really is! Many of us don’t live on acreage with ponds and meadows to scout out, and it is more difficult for some to find safe parks and places to explore. Yet, if we truly believed that taking time to get out into nature was critically important, wouldn’t we have a new desire to pray for and seek out special spots to view the natural wonders that are close at hand? Even in the heart of city life, one can find so many great examples of natural phenomenon, and nature is always as close as our own backyard. We even know one family who strolled through cemeteries, enjoying lovely trees of all kinds, ponds, flowers, birds, insects, and more with their children.

If you believe in the need, you will find a way, so here are seven extra special reasons to get up and get out!

Seven Special Reasons to Get Up and Get Out!

1. Nature walks will teach your child to watch everything around him. These outings will greatly increase his observational skills and his outdoor life skills. Take your children walking often, and watch your science lessons become more relevant year after year as your students are able to apply experientially, through this time outside, the concepts you have presented. You see, it is one thing to teach the life cycle of a frog and quite another to find egg masses and tadpoles in a nearby pond! Children are filled with wonder as they use a net to collect specimens or turn over rocks on a lakeshore and find crawdads escaping every which way! This is life! This is the making of memories! This is real learning, not book learning!

2. Take your children out often, and they will find that one thing in nature always leads to another. If they are interested in a frog they see one day, the next day they will wonder and want to find out about the crickets and worms that the frogs eat. Then they may get interested in the condition of the pond water, and so it goes. This is experience-directed learning that is so exciting to your children. By walking outdoors with them on a regular basis, you will set off a chain reaction of learning experiences for your children that will continue for a lifetime, as they find that each discovery is connected to many other parts of nature.

3. Camaraderie—that special intimacy that comes from adventuring and making discoveries together—is another benefit of a good nature walk. Whether a mother or father walks with all their children or they take their journeys with just one child at a time or they use different combinations over the months, the time spent will reap intimacy as well as nature knowledge. Yes, you all will see and learn together, and that is wonderful. The times of quiet togetherness and the times of deep conversations along the way are special features of nature outings. It is as if the Lord has provided a miraculous setting for you to “be” with your children. Planned nature walks will provide years of the type of environment that enhances rich family ties.

4. At certain times when viewing nature, some quietness, solitude, and patience are necessary. Of course a small child doesn’t understand this at first, and the lessons that a parent uses to teach a little one to walk more quietly, sit for a bit, and watch what is around him must be gentle and full of patience. If you model (especially fun when acted out over-dramatically) walking softly and being as quiet as possible for part of your walks, your child will begin to see that it is often in times of quietness that the greatest marvels are seen. Then you will have done your job well. The desire to be quiet in order to see something special will be catching, and in time your child will begin to value quietness and solitude. Nature walks, begun simply and continued over the years—time spent watching and thinking—will develop a “deepness of heart” in a student who learns to quiet himself in these journeys together. Couldn’t our world use a few more inhabitants with “deepness of heart”?

5. As your child grows in his awareness of the magnificence of creation, he will grow to love it. What he grows to love, he will want to take care of. Nature walks, begun early and continued throughout your teaching days, will lead your child to an awareness of the necessity of stewardship of our natural resources. We are all called to be the “gentle tenders” of our world. But if we don’t even know anything about it, it is difficult to want to preserve it and use our resources wisely.

6. Taking time to walk outdoors will create a lifetime appreciation for what the Lord has made, and that deep love of nature will become a rich field for worship. The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, and those who spend time in the out of doors discovering the wonders and learning that it comes from Him will have a vast and limitless resource for worshiping the One who created it all! Modeling a grateful heart for the beauty of nature all around us will flow out onto our children. Every leaf, each bug, every cell under a microscope is a marvel worthy of all our praise. If we display a heart of praise and worship for such a magnificent Creator, then wonder and worship will come to our children as well.

7. Something else will grow from enjoyable nature walks and seeing the magnificence of nature on a regular basis. A new understanding in the heart of your student will develop: nothing in nature is “common.” In the book Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, we read that the people in Bentley’s day thought snowflakes were “as common as dirt.” But Mr. Bentley knew, because he had seen them under a microscope, that each snowflake was utterly and beautifully unique. All of nature is like that! Each stone has its own loveliness; each drop of water has an entire world of creatures swimming in it; each bit of moss or lichen—extraordinary! Everything that the Lord has made is amazing—nothing is common! How wonderful to begin at a young age to teach our children about the amazing natural world around them and the One who made it all.

So, if we took a quick quiz, what are the seven important reasons to get up and get out?

1. Gaining observational and life skills, as well as actually experiencing school lessons so that they become relevant

2. Understanding the connectedness of life

3. Experiencing camaraderie, intimacy, and the joy of making rich family ties

4. Developing a quiet heart . . . one that can actually be still now and then, and one that can find benefits from moments of solitude

5. Becoming aware of stewardship and conservation

6. Creating a rich avenue for worship

7. Learning that nothing in nature is “common.”

Perhaps nature walks truly are more important than we first imagined!

"All natural" is now teetering on the edge of becoming mainstream. Case in point? Pizza Hut. Their new "all natural" pizzas have hit the stores and marked the beginning of...well, something. I'm not entirely sure what though. It seems like a good thing, but is it? If Pizza Hut can use the term "all natural", doesn't it make you question how strict the requirements are for earning that status? Before "all natural" completely takes over, let's take a step back and make sure we know exactly what it does and does NOT mean. Prepare to be shocked!

What "All Natural" DOES Mean:

No Artificial Sweeteners or Colors: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated that nothing synthetic can be labeled "all natural". Artificial sweeteners and colors are the quintessential "synthetic", so those are covered and "all natural" foods won't contain them.

No Artificial Flavors: The FDA defines a natural flavor as one that is derived "from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf" or similar plant (or even animal) material. While this looks good at first glance, you could "derive" many unnatural products from natural plant or animal materials. But at least purely synthetic artificial flavors are not going to be found in "all natural" foods.

What "All Natural" DOES NOT Mean:

"All Natural" Does NOT Mean Organic: Most foods claiming to be "all-natural" are simply stating that they haven't added anything man-made to the animal or plant that you are consuming, such as the variety of chemical preservatives commonly found in our food. However, there is a strong possibility that the plants or animals used in the product were subjected to pesticides, herbicides, genetic modification or chemicals during their growth. On the other hand, the label "USDA organic" has received a national definition in the U.S., and strict rules and regulations to go along with it...which include no use of pesticides, herbicides, genetic modification or chemicals.

"All Natural" Does NOT Mean No High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): This one is unbelievable, but true. The FDA says: "HFCS contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives and meets FDA's requirements for the use of the term 'natural.' HFCS, like table sugar and honey, is natural. It is made from corn, a natural grain product." I have NO IDEA why they say this - HFCS is not found in nature and requires multiple enzymatic treatment steps to be made. "All Natural" should most certainly, DEFINITELY, mean NO HFCS. Some companies (such as Schweppes, Kraft and Snapple) have been sued in the past for labeling HFCS ridden drinks as "all natural".

"All Natural" does not mean NO processing: It is virtually impossible to get food that has not been processed unless you are buying it from a farmer's market.

"All Natural" does not mean healthful: Remember that all "natural" things are not necessarily good for you. For example:

-MSG is natural and there is a great deal of concern about its health implications.

-Salt is natural, and so over-abundant in today's foods that most Americans consume 2-3 times more than their recommended daily allowance.

-Sugar is natural. Because "all natural" means no artificial sweeteners are added, some "all natural" foods may be saturated with sugar to compensate. Be sure to check for the amount of sugar on the label.

Going back to the "all natural" Pizza Hut pizza, it has 220 calories, 8 grams of fat and 460mg of sodium per small slice...a far cry from being healthful. How did Pizza Hut do on the "natural" part? Well, it looks like the ingredients really are natural, although the pepperoni contains "natural flavors" and as we know, that could mean just about anything.

So what does this all mean? Unfortunately, it means that it's not that simple to make sure that you really are eating what most of us would consider to be "all natural" food. That being said, many "all natural" foods really are what we would think of as "all natural". We have to stay vigilant and informed so that we make the right food choices and I will do my best to bring you the most important information.

If we were to have a truly native landscape in Houston Texas it would look like an abandon field of various grasses, a thicket edge of tangled vines, shrubs and underbrush or a mature grove of oaks with leaf ground cover underneath. These landscapes are beautiful out in the countryside but in our suburban enclaves we seek some order and design. You say to yourself "it looks messy or it needs to be improved upon." Let's say that the first requirement is it should look beautiful to you. It is your interpretation of how you want natural to look. The natural landscape is really improving upon the existing natural conditions and making it even better into our own liking. On the most wooded of lots in Piney Point and Memorial the issue becomes "how to work with and plant under all this shade?" There is an aesthetic, a blend of the existing and the things we can improve upon based on the comforts, functions and the necessary uses of the site- a landscape design marriage. In the natural landscape interpretation we take the best of natural site elements and make it even better still based on the concept of form, function to house comfort and beauty. So now that we know the natural landscape is by no means native or natural what is it?

Nature as Inspiration

The natural landscape designer will first and foremost pay attention to the "sense of place" and "mood" of the site and its relationship with the house. Inspiration can come from the existing site or from vacations and travels throughout the natural world. Are there a grove of fantastic trees in the rear lawn, a view out the backyard to the Bayou that should be preserved or a large back lawn of beautiful old Pecan trees? On a new site you may borrow a nature inspired vision from a place in the wild that you want to recreate. For example a flagstone patio under a soaring oak tree that reminds you of a cliff or hillock in Ireland. Highlight the best features of the sight and down play those not so attractive. The natural landscape will be more sympathetic to working with the site rather than changing it. Work with the existing site features, trees, or existing woodland edges rather than imposing a specific "shape" or "design" as in classical landscape design or formal landscape design.

Interpreting Natures Hardscape

The landscape design for the natural landscape has the same overall approach to the form and functionality of outdoor rooms and spaces as all of the other landscape styles. The overall design can be formal or informal. One design concept for the natural is to create more formal hardscape spaces and surfaces near the home and to dissipate into more natural spaces and surfaces as you move away from the house. In this approach you are creating a hierarchy of spaces and pathways:

• Luxury Swimming Pools-materials might include slate and natural stone coping and surfaces to create a refined rustic overall feel.

• Walkways and pathways-materials including cut stone, wood, pavestone, gravel and cobble or small stones and boulders.

• Landscape Lighting-to light up existing large trees or path lighting and accent lighting for natural flagstone pathways and features

• Fencing and gates-made of split cedar for a rustic natural look

Interpreting Natures Landscape

The landscape design can reflect the patterns of natural plantings in nature. We have found that plantings in larger masses and groupings as opposed to natural associations are just easier to maintain over time. Natural patterns and plant masses can be utilized creating a natural look as follows:

Patterns of Nature. Nature groups compensating plantings in terms of drifts which can be interpreted as natural curves and arc of plant materials.

Plant Associations. Plant groupings that grow together such as grasses, roses and flowers in full sun, small ornamental trees at woodland edges such as red buds, dogwoods, and deep shade areas of longleaf pines, with ferns below. The design layout of planting is still based around the form and function of use areas and the layout of hardscape surfaces.

Conclusion

The goal of the natural landscape is truly an interpretation of nature and our attempt to represent our reality of beauty and bring about its very best features. In the traditional landscape design sense the home and landscape still function in relation to your wants and needs for form, function and your ideal of natures canvas.

Did you know that the way you eat and when you eat can affect the look of your skin? What you put in your body is more important than what you put on it in terms of skin care and looking your best. The best place to start with a natural beauty regimen is at the dining table. One of the easiest natural beauty cures is to make sure you are getting enough water. Dry bodies have dry skin, wrinkles are more pronounced and the skin can have a dull, lack-luster appearance. For glowing, vibrant, younger –looking skin, give it, and the rest of your body, a drink. Another dietary deficiency that can cause your skin to look less than its best is not getting enough fiber in your diet. Choosing whole grains, beans, legumes, and nuts, seeds and dried fruits is as good for the outside of you as it is for the inside. Excess sugar intake can cause a breakdown of the collagen in our skin cells. Collagen is responsible for the elasticity of our skin, tendons, cartilage and other connective tissues in the body. This loss of collagen causes sagging skin, as well as the formation of wrinkles adding up to premature aging of the skin. Lastly, we all know our waistlines and hearts need us to watch the kinds of fats we eat. But did you know your skin has much the same requirements? Essential fatty acids like flaxseed and fish oils work on the body at the cell level, fighting inflammatory conditions like acne and eczema, as well as moisturizing dry skin from the inside.

What would a trip to a spa be without a facial? You can give yourself a natural face lift right in your own home with ingredients from your kitchen. One simple and easy recipe for a natural facial is to take two egg yolks and whisk them until firm and consistent. Then add in a teaspoon or so of sugar. Mix the two thoroughly and then apply to your face. Relax for 20 to 30 minutes before washing off with warm water and a soft cloth. Eggs have plenty of protein rich in amino acids, which help smooth skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The sugar not only adds texture, but also gives the skin a nice healthy glow.

Most spas offer decadent services like full body scrubs, and surely you can't duplicate those at home, can you? Absolutely! Take ½ cup olive oil, ¾ cup fine sea salt and several drops of your favorite essential oil, like lavender, rose or sandalwood. Combine altogether and then hop in the shower. Rinse yourself down and then exfoliate all over with your scrub. Rinse again. You can cleanse with your favorite soap after, or prepare for a long soak in the bath with Natural Beauty Secret #4, your organic, homemade moisturizing bath sachet. The olive oil will moisturize your skin, while the sea salts provide a gentle, natural exfoliation, leaving skin looking younger and feeling softer, smoother and sexier.

Forget the bath sachets and oils that leave your wallet stretched and your tub slimy. You can create a luxuriously moisturizing bath using the same ingredients you have for breakfast. While your bath water is running, add ¼ to ½ cup of dry skim milk powder. Take ¼ to ½ cup of instant oatmeal and tie it up in a piece of cheese cloth, netting or even an old knee high stocking. Add it to your bath as well. If you'd like, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil again, just to keep you smelling as lovely as you'll look.

The icing on most spa visits is a pampering manicure. File and shape your nails as usual. Over-polishing of your nails and the use of nail glues for acrylic nails can both lead to discoloration. A quick scrub with a whitening toothpaste and a soft bristled toothbrush, or a long soak in a small bowl of lemon juice, can bring your nails back to their natural tone. Whiten your nails, then can give yourself beautiful, healthy, shiny, strong fingernails at home with the aid of a few essential oils. A mixture of olive oil, coconut oil, lemon oil and natural vanilla extract makes a sweet smelling oil to rub into the nails and cuticles. The oils act to strengthen and smooth the nails, preventing cracking and chipping. They soften the cuticles as well, ending embarrassing and painful hang-nails and torn cuticles.

So, while you may not have a Swedish masseuse at home, you can give yourself the same "lap of luxury" beauty treatments offered by many of the fanciest spas and salons. And you can do it for a fraction of the cost, without using harsh chemicals or expensive, hard to find products. While you may have to wait for that posh weekend retreat, with a few simple natural beauty secrets, you can experience the same relaxing, natural beauty results right in your own home.

Step 1 - Perform Health Tests
Perform a test to check for organ stress, nutritional deficiencies, and food sensitivities. The most effective, and quick test in our opinion is Electro-Dermal Screening. An organ stress test will show you which organs in your body need to be detoxified, which organs are weak or have a genetic weakness. Many people have nutritional deficiencies and need to check what they are specifically deficient in, because a serious deficiency in any one vitamin or mineral can lead to illness. The most common deficiency is Zinc and Magnesium. Testing for food sensitivities is also very important. Many people unknowingly consume foods that are harmful to their body. Some people are allergic to milk and it can cause problems such as asthma, sinus problems, or frequent infections. The most common allergies or sensitivities are to wheat, gluten, and milk.

Step 2 - Nourish and Support
The only recommended supplements:
- Enteric coated probiotics
- Essential fatty acids (Omega 3/6/9)
- Green drinks (Spirulina, Chlorella)
- OPC's and antioxidants

Probiotics are the good bacteria in your digestive system that help prevent infections, colds, and flus. They help build up your body's immune system. They improve digestion and make B-vitamins and vitamin K for your body. You are lacking probiotics if you take antibiotics frequently. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria, but they also kill the good bacteria. Instead of taking antibiotics, build up a strong immune system. You will notice a huge reduction in how often you get sick once you start taking probiotics. Your body is designed to fight off all kinds of diseases, colds and flus on it's own. Take probiotics in capsule form with enteric coating.

An omega 3/6/9 blend is very important, specifically omega 3, as it is not easy to get in the diet, unless you make an effort to consume foods high in omega 3. There are many health problems related to being deficient in omega 3. Omega 3 has a huge list of benefits such as cancer prevention, heart disease prevention, Alzheimer's prevention, improves memory or mental function, improves eye health, lifts depression, PMS relief, reduces arthritis symptoms, and many more. Many people are deficient in omega 3. Omega 3 is found mainly in fish. Omega 6 is equally important and it is found mainly in nuts and seeds. Omega 9 is usually not deficient. Fish oil is the best source of omega 3, but look for a product that has been molecularly-distilled a process that filters out pollutants and heavy metals. Primrose or borage oil is the best source for omega 6.

Green drink are highly recommended over vitamin/mineral supplement because they are natural, and the nutrients are bio-chelated, which means the body will more readily take them in and absorb the nutrients. Typical supplements are nothing more than concentrates and extracts that have been artificially made. The nutrients in green drink are naturally balanced and won't accumulate in your body and become toxic like man-made vitamin supplement. These super foods are more nutrient dense than vegetables, grains, or other any other food. Spirulina and Chlorella come from the sea, where there are more minerals available than anywhere in the world. The soil our vegetables grow in are becoming more and more deficient in essential minerals but the sea is full of minerals. It is best if you don't consume sea water, but the plants that live in it. Spirulina is very high in protein content with over 60%, while red meat is 27%, and soy is 34%. The protein in Spirulina is twelve times more digestible than the protein in beef. It also contains high amounts of calcium, manganese, iron, chromium, phosphorus, molybdenum, iodine, chloride, magnesium, sodium, zinc, potassium, selenium, germanium, copper, boron, as well as vitamin A, B, C, D, E. Chlorella contains more calcium than milk, ten times the beta-carotene of carrots and is rich in most B vitamins except folic acid, and is very high in B-12. It also has Magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Potassium, Iron. Chlorella is very good at removing heavy metals and pesticides. Both Spirulina and Chlorella are shown to shrinks cancer tumors, regulate blood sugar, remove heavy metals from your body (metals like mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic), repair DNA damage, and prevent and reverse many diseases.

Your body is constantly being attacked by free radicals which can destroy cells, tissues and organs. Free radicals come from environmental pollution, smoking and various synthetic chemicals that are added to our water and food. Free radicals are chemically unstable because they lack one electron. In order to stabilize themselves, they attack cells and grab an electron. These chemicals damage enzymes, cell membranes and even DNA. Free radicals have been linked to over 60 diseases, especially chronic, degenerative diseases associated with the aging process such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Studies show that oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC), a bioflavonoid found in some plants, is one of the most powerful free radical fighters known to man. According to medical studies, OPC is 50 times more effective than vitamin E and 20 times more effective than vitamin C in protecting the body from free radicals. One of the best sources of OPC is grape seed extract, documented use of which goes back almost 450 years. As a supplement, OPC has been used in Europe and around the world since 1951. Many people have reported incredible results with OPC such as improvement in allergies and arthritis, heart attack and stroke risk have been known to decrease, reduction of wrinkles, improved brain function, improved vision, improvement in diabetes, relief from PMS symptoms, improvement of multiple sclerosis.

Step 3 - Detoxify
Take One Healing Formula once a year for 2 months to detoxify your body from pollutants, prevent nutritional deficiencies, and help your body achieve close to perfect health. If you have an illness, you must take the formula for as long as it takes to eliminate the illness. The longer you have had the illness, the longer it may take to eliminate it. Every 6 months it is helpful to detoxify your body for 1-2 months from pollutants (heavy metals, chemicals, pesticides) by taking Milk Thistle, Dandelion Root, Indol-3-Carbonols, Miso, Dulse/Kelp, and Chlorella. The Master Cleanse or a juice fast for 3-10 days is also highly recommended.

With more women now suffering from yeast infections straight after treating their UTI, they are switching to alternative treatments. A urinary tract infection natural remedy is becoming the choice for a lot of women because of the speed in which they work, and the health benefits that accompany them. Taking a course of antibiotics every time they have an infection is now becoming as much part of the cause as it is the cure.

What antibiotics do to you

Approximately ten million women will visit their doctor this year with an infection in their urinary tract. All of these women will be prescribed antibiotics. For a high percentage of women the antibiotics will work, but for some women the antibiotics will either cause another infection or create an antibiotics resistant E-coli bacteria in their body. When this resistant bacteria is created chronic UTI's set in, and then it's time for more powerful antibiotics to be prescribed.

Beneficial bacteria

We all have beneficial bacteria living in and on our bodies that keep infection causing bacteria under control. Antibiotics kill these beneficial bacteria as well as the bacteria they were prescribed for. Your beneficial bacteria will also keep your immune system strong. So the antibiotics kill beneficial bacteria and weaken the immune system which are both needed to be at full strength to prevent infections of any kind.

Length of treatment

A course of antibiotics will usually last about 5 to 7 days before it has successfully cured your UTI. A urinary tract infection natural remedy usually takes about 12 hours. The reason a natural cure is so fast is it doesn't rely on killing all of the E-coli to eliminate it. A natural cure will create an environment in your urinary tract that the E-coli can't live in, and then all you do is flush the E-coli out.

This is done with products that you can purchase locally, and cost a lot less than a course of antibiotics.

Your health is not at threat in any way like it is when you're taking drugs and medicines, and your immune system will improve, and be able to prevent a reoccurrence of the infection.
